Two city parishes enter archdiocese's 'pastoral planning' process

Two city parishes will enter the Philadelphia Roman Catholic Archdiocese's "pastoral planning" process to determine whether they should merge or share resources.

Our Lady of Ransom, at 6740 Roosevelt Blvd. in Castor, and Resurrection of Our Lord, at 2000 Shelmire Ave. in Rhawnhurst, will take part in the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Initiative, the archdiocese said Sunday. Our Lady of Ransom was founded in 1954 and Resurrection of Our Lord in 1928.

The initiative started in 2010 to determine the viability of parishes in the five-county area. A panel evaluates factors such as registered parishioners and financial health with input from pastors and parish representatives.

At the end of the process, parishes are either merged or become partners, the archdiocese said. Partnership allows parishes to maintain separate parish status and financial independence while sharing one pastor and staff members.

The current round of planning is expected to conclude this spring, the archdiocese said, with decisions taking effect July 1.
