Shootings, stabbings mark New Year's Eve in Philly

Crazy-Leprechaun

A security guard at the Crazy Leprechaun Bar in Port Richmond shot and killed a man who hit him in the head with a club and stabbed him in the back after being denied entry to the closed bar on New Year's Eve, according to police.

The melee was one of two slayings in Philadelphia Saturday night, police said. Two women and a man were also stabbed in separate cases just before midnight, and two other men were injured in a double shooting, police said.

The shooting at the Crazy Leprechaun, on the 3500 block of Richmond Street, happened around 2:17 a.m., police said.

According to police, the 32-year-old security guard - whom they did not identify - said he got into a fight with a 31-year-old man because he had declined to let the man go back into the bar to use the restroom. The bar had already closed.

During the fight, police said, the security guard was hit twice in the head with a club and stabbed in the back. He then fired his gun twice, police said, hitting the victim once in the back.

The victim - who was not identified by police - was first taken to 3200 block of Aramingo Avenue, where police were flagged down, and then taken to Temple University Hospital, police said. He was pronounced dead at 2:34 a.m.

The case was still under investigation Sunday night, a police spokesman said, but it appeared that the security guard was a victim and there was nothing to indicate he would face charges.

Less than half an hour later, at 2:57 a.m., police in Tioga found a 41-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest on the front porch of a house on the 1900 block of West Willard Street. He died of his wounds.

Police did not identify the victim or announce an arrest, but they did say they were looking for a male suspect who was about 5-foot-6 with a medium build and short hair.

Earlier in the night, around 11:19 p.m., a 48-year-old woman and a 28-year-old woman were stabbed on the 3900 block of East Roosevelt Boulevard in Olney, police said.

The 48-year-old was stabbed twice in the chest and twice in each arm, police said, and the younger woman was stabbed once in the right wrist. Police did not identify either victim or say who stabbed them, and no arrest had been made by Sunday morning.

Both victims were taken to Einstein Medical Center and were in stable condition, police said.

Around 11:33 p.m., a 46-year-old man was stabbed twice in the left arm and once in the back inside a house on the 1700 block of Moore Street in Point Breeze.

Police said that the victim - whom they did not identify - had been stabbed by someone whose identity was known, but that no one had been arrested. The victim, meanwhile, was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

Two other men - ages 22 and 23 - were injured around 2:16 a.m. during a shooting in Nicetown, police said. Neither victim was identified, but authorities said the 22-year-old was hit once in the right leg, and the other man was struck in the left elbow. Police said that there had been no arrests and did not identify any suspects.

The men were taken to Temple University Hospital and were in stable condition, police said.
