Suspects in violent beating outside Geno's identified

SGENO21

Philadelphia police have arrested one man and have a warrant out for a second in connection with a June 11 assault outside Geno's Steaks in South Philadelphia, an attack that was captured on video and widely aired.

That publicity resulted in a flurry of tips that led to the identities of the suspects, police said Monday.

Police said Alberto Lopez, 24, of Camden, turned himself in to the South Detective Division on Sept. 14, and was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses. He remained in custody Monday.

The second suspect, Luis Nieves, also of Camden, remained at large Monday and was being sought by police.

Investigators said the assault happened about 4:15 a.m. outside Geno's, 1219 S. Ninth St. The video shows five men beating up three other men. One of the victims was struck in the face and body, and his face was cut. A second man was struck in the face and body, and the third victim was punched in the face.

After the assault, police said, Lopez and Nieves fled in two vehicles with New Jersey plates - a dark-colored pickup truck and an SUV - in an unknown direction.
