WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Paul Ryan will campaign with U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello in Chester County Thursday, hoping to help a Republican freshman in a moderate district.
Costello is widely considered to have the advantage in his race against Democrat Mike Parrish -- the national Democratic party has not made the race a priority -- but he represents the kind of affluent, well-educated district where many Republicans fear presidential nominee Donald Trump might alienate normally loyal GOP voters.
Ryan's presence is likely aimed at providing a high-profile counterweight. He has become a popular surrogate for Republicans trying to keep their distance from Trump.
Ryan and Costello will appear at J-Tech, a Chester Springs company that builds and sells specialized trucks used in highway construction. The event will be geared toward highlighting Costello's work, on the House transportation committee, on a five-year transportation funding bill.
