Man dies after being stunned with Taser by Burbank police

Police and L.A. County prosecutors today investigated the death of a man who died after Burbank police stunned him with a Taser outside a home where another man barricaded himself in a standoff lasting under an hour.

The incident began about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday when officers went to a home in the 500 block of North Mariposa Street in response to reports that a man had been making criminal threats, said Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco.

The man, who was in his 60s, confronted the officers outside the house, and an officer activated his Taser to subdue him, causing the man to collapse, Losacco said.

A second man then came to the door armed with a handgun and threatened police, Losacco said. According to reports from the scene, the second man was the brother of the man who had been shocked, but the relationship was not immediately confirmed.

The officers then pulled back and took cover in the face of the armed threat, Losacco said. The second man refused to come out of the house and a standoff began, prompting the officers to request backup.

Officers then pulled the man who had collapsed away from the home and turned him over to paramedics, but he died at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner’s office.

The man who barricaded himself remained in the home for around 40 minutes before he surrendered and was arrested, Losacco said. His name was not immediately released.

The death of the man who was subdued with a Taser was being investigated by Burbank police and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, Losacco said. The investigation was underway this morning.

No details were immediately released on the alleged criminal threats that drew police to the Mariposa Street home or to whom they had been directed.
