Inmate's death leads to suit against South Jersey jail

A Philadelphia lawyer filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of the family of a Bridgeton man who died in the Cumberland County Jail, saying officials there failed to monitor Jon Watson and keep him in a safe environment before he hanged himself.

Another inmate found Watson, 43, in a cell on June 3, according to the suit. It was filed in federal court in Camden. Conrad Benedetto, the attorney, said in a statement the incident was "extremely concerning."

Benedetto's firm is also representing several other individuals whose loved ones died in the county jail.

They include Alissa Allen, 24, of Millville, who died in March 2015, and Robert Wayne Lewis, 35, of Vineland, who died in October 2015. Both hanged themselves, authorities said.
