Rob Kardashian at 30: Inside the New Dad's Most Formative, Meaningful Relationships Over the Years

The kid brother of the Kardashian family is turning 30.

Rob Kardashian, whom we've watched come of age on Keeping Up With the Kardashians for the past decade, celebrates his 30th birthday today—and we imagine his sprawling family can't believe he's all grown up, either!

The past year in particular has been especially momentous and life-changing for Rob, who became a first-time dad in November when daughter Dream Kardashian was born. And thanks to all the lessons that come with fatherhood, both preparing for it and actually living it, the young man whom we've seen till now figuring it all out as he went along is starting a new chapter that focuses on his baby girl.

But no man is an island, and the relationships that most impacted his life over the years have helped lead him to where he is today.

It can't have been easy growing up with five sisters, particularly at the point when everything they were doing became camera-worthy, but Rob naturally gravitated to the sibling who was closest to him in age—Khloe Kardashian.

Barely two and a half years older, Khloe became his biggest supporter, confidante and reality check, never coddling him too much or refusing to tell him exactly what she thought of his decisions.

Rob even lived with Khloe off and on, both at the Tarzana house she shared with Lamar Odom and later when she moved back to Calabasas. And when she was between houses, Khloe stayed with Rob at his place.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians Then & Now

"Rob lives with me now and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love having him with me," Khloe told Complex in 2015. "I have a big-ass house and I wanted it so he could feel, like, comfortable. He's going through a hard time now, and it's behind gates. With this crazy lifestyle you have to think of places where you can still have your freedom."

She added, "I just bought him a rug for his bedroom, and he was so cute. He'll text me and tell me how much he likes it, and he notices things. So, I like it. I call him my son as a joke."

The hard time Khloe was referring to was a period in which Rob retreated from the public eye as much as possible as he battled health concerns related to diabetes, which he worked to get under control in the past year as well.

"If only you could see yourself through my eyes!" Khloe captioned a throwback pic of her brother during their time as roomies. "I'll forever be obsessed with you! My one and only! #MyAce."

Rob has actually lived with all three of his older sisters on different occasions, including Kourtney Kardashian when he was only 16, right after their father, Robert Kardashian Sr., passed away—and he has learned life lessons from all of the discerning women in his life.

"I've had women all in my life since day one," he explained to Ellen DeGeneres in 2011 about growing up Kardashian. "I know the proper gifts to get a girl. I'm very open about this—I get my nails done once a week. I get facials—my mom raised me that way."

He continued, "Since middle school, [mom Kris Jenner showed me],' This is how you treat a woman. Don't be the cheater who, when you're married, cheated on his wife, don't do that.' Just the little things, and I'm just so happy to have her. She's at every one of my shows [of Dancing With the Stars] since day one, she's always supporting me. She's the best mom ever."

Caitlyn Jenner's Family Photos

Also in his life since he was practically a baby is Caitlyn Jenner, who passed on to Rob a love of car racing and golf when he was growing up and served an extremely important role, as Bruce Jenner, of being the only other guy in that house full of women. "My relationship with Bruce is never going to change," Rob said on The Best Show in 2013 after __news broke that the Jenners were divorcing. "He's been my best friend since I was 2 years old."

Rob was among the family members who called Caitlyn to compliment her Vanity Fair cover in 2015 when she introduced herself to the world.

"You have always been a role model to me and now more than I ever, I look up to you. LOVE YOU," Rob tweeted at the time as well.

"They kinda torture you, the sisters," George Lopez observed when Rob and Kourtney appeared on Lopez Tonight in 2011.

"All day," Rob smiled. "That's all they do. [Growing up], at my basketball games, I'd shoot free throws, they'd be screaming. Everybody knew my sisters from embarrassing me."

"We'd be screaming and jumping up and down like he was the best player on the team," Kourtney recalled. She also revealed that they would dress Rob up and put makeup on him when he was little.

The good grooming habits stuck, though, and Rob said that he, Khloe and then brother-in-law Lamar had mani-pedi appointments back at their house after the taping.

And while Rob lived there, he grew especially close to Lamar.

"Lamar, from day one, was like, 'Yo, I want you to live with me. You don't have any brothers. I don't have any brothers, either'...and he's trying to get another championship for the Lakers, so when he's on the road, I gotta be there with Khloe to kind of just help her out," Rob explained to Lopez.

The young man did say that he was looking for his own house, though, because Khloe just had "too many rules"—including that he had to be in a relationship with a girl or otherwise formally introduce her to Khloe before he could have her over. Rob joked that being around all of Lamar's candy and junk food in the house (the former NBA player has an infamous sweet tooth) was also getting to be a little much for him.

But Khloe's brother and her ex maintained their friendship even after her marriage broke up, and when Lamar was back in the family fold while recovering from his near-fatal 2015 overdose, Rob was there for him—and vice versa. Lamar was also the one who encouraged Khloe to call Rob when she was feeling that he was distancing himself from her after announcing he and Blac Chynawere expecting a baby.

"Rob and Lamar speak all the time," a source told E! News during that time. "They have a very strong friendship and have helped each other out of dark times and continue to lift each other up."

Scott Disick, who used to affectionately call Rob "Bob" back in the day ("We joke all the time, we get each other," Rob said), also enjoyed lending his expertise to Kourtney's little brother about being a dad.

"Take every day like it's a new day, start fresh, be present, be happy, and you know, have a positive energy and a positive vibe so your child comes into the world with a positive energy," Scott, who was front and center at Rob and Chyna's baby shower, told E! News, apprising us of the sort of advice he was giving the dad to be.

"Rob is like my brother and I love him more than anybody in the world," he added.  "I've been around with him and helping out where he needs help and kind of showing him the ropes of what it's going to be like to be a new dad."

In addition to all the family time, the admitted homebody has stuck with a close-knit set of buddies he's had since childhood, and as he grew up he kept the lessons his late father taught him close at hand.

"I've had the same group of friends since fourth grade. I do the same activities, like bowling," Rob told Ellen. "I'm just not into the whole spotlight. It's great, it's given us so many opportunities in our life and we're very thankful for that, but my dad kinda raised me, since I lived with him mostly before he passed away." Kris and Robert Sr. divorced in 1991, when Rob was 4.

"He just raised me, like, he was very humble. He didn't really care about all that. He did really well for himself, but he never went out there and flaunted it...He taught us a lot at a young age."

Rob also continues to pay tribute to his dad with his high-end sock line, Arthur George, which he's extremely proud of—Arthur being his middle name, and George his dad's middle name.

"I wish, obviously, I still had him to this day to see what's going on," Rob told the Wall Street Journal in 2013. "[I know] he's up there, but just to get his real advice and help me and everything. He was such a powerful man and such a great entrepreneur...I wish I could learn more at this age and this time of my life from him. But I learned so much and I'm so fortunate—some people don't even have a father. So to have 15 years with my father was more than enough."

After splitting time between his parents, Rob recalled moving in with his father full-time about a year before Robert Sr. died of cancer in 2003 at the age of 53.

"That was like a sign from God, I got to spend a year with my dad right before he passed away," he said, "and I feel like I learned to just try and be independent."

Khloé & Kim Kardashian's Instagram Wisdom

"I had a really close bond with my dad. I was only with him for 15 years," Rob told People last year as he was preparing to become a father himself. "That's why I'm looking forward to having that long-term bond with my child and being funny and goofy like my dad was...I'm excited for this little journey now with my child and Chyna...I want to have a fun life."

And while he and Chyna aren't together right now, she played a major role in motivating him to start taking care of himself again and helped him get his diabetes under control.

"Rob is such a great guy," Khloe told People in 2015, when Rob became more reclusive and his appearances in public slowed to a trickle. "He's charming, charismatic, everything. That's what's so infuriating. I'm like, 'Where is your will to live life? Let's be around people!'"

After he and Chyna, whom he'd known for a long time, became a couple, Rob started to do exactly that.

"They haven't seen Rob come out of his shell like this in years," a source told E! News a year ago, not long after they started dating. "The family is very grateful for [Chyna's] help with giving Rob 'confidence' again and putting his health and fitness first...All the sisters are happy to have their brother back."

Dreamy Dream bean got her first shot today and she is 2 months old ! Woohoooooo ???? I wanted a boy so bad and now that I got my girl I am so Thankful and Happy for her and wouldn't want it any other way ! She is the best and I love her so much and I thank God every day for her cuz she is the best and she is my best friend :) LOL I love her so much ??

Rob and Chyna are now re-defining their relationship as co-parents of Dream—whom Rob bonded with instantly, down for the count from day one.

"She is the best and I love her so much and I thank God every day for her cuz she is the best and she is my best friend :)" Rob captioned a picture of his baby girl in January. And just a couple weeks ago, at the end of one of their visits, he wrote, "Saying bye to my beautiful baby girl ..... she is smiling at me. U see how she looking at her daddy … I literally can't get enough of this girl,,, I never felt a love or happiness like this ever in my life and she makes me so happy...about to miss her so much …Love You baby Dream."

Grey's Anatomy's Sarah Drew Breaks Down the Moment Every Japril Fan Was Waiting For & What It Means For The Future

And just like that, it looks like Japril is back on.

All it took was Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April's (Sarah Drew) trip to Montana on tonight's new episode of Grey's Anatomy to get the co-parents and former spouses back between the sheets. Well, that and a run-in with Jackson's long-lost pop—hey, Eric Roberts!—of course. But with the status of their relationship left rather ambiguous by the episode's end, not to mention that pesky Grey Sloan Memorial civil war they've got to return home to, where will the docs go from here?

For some clarity on the subject, E! __news got Drew on the phone for her thoughts. What follows is our unedited Q&A, covering the thrilling fling, what it meant for April to be present during Jackson's major life moment, and how she's readying herself for the onslaught of tweets from Japril fans that she's certainly about to receive.

ABC

We've got to start right away with the moment that every Japril fan is going to be tweeting about. How are you preparing your Twitter feed for the deluge of tweets coming your way?
[Laughs] Oh my gosh, I don't know. I'm actually going to be on set all day tomorrow, so I'm going to have to be just popping back and forth between shots to talk to people, to talk to the fans and stuff. I've got a lot of behind the scenes photos which are kind of fun that I'm going to be posting. But, yeah, I know so many fans have been waiting for this moment and I think it's going to be pretty satisfying for them.

In all seriousness, what do you think this means for them? Is this like a "What happens in Montana, stays in Montana" situation or could this be the beginning of a true reunion for these two?
I think it could go in a couple different directions. It could either lead to total confusion about what their status is—they're still living together. They're still roommates and they've got this baby that they love and adore and have made together, you know? So it could either lead to confusion or it could be a solidification of their best friendship, just a reminder that they really have always been each other's person since their time over at Mercy West and it could be very platonic moving forward. Or it could be a total rekindling of their romance. And you'll just have to wait and keep watching to see what happens. But I think any of those is totally justifiable and makes total sense to me. I don't think it's a thing that happened that is never thought about again or discussed again. I think it meant something important, but what exactly that leads to, you'll just have to wait and see.

Grey's Anatomy's Big Japril Episode Just Might Be an Avery Family Reunion in Disguise

The episode also holds such huge moments for Jackson—
Oh my gosh, he's so amazing! Jesse is brilliant. He's absolutely brilliant. It's such beautiful work. it's really exciting to see him just shine in this way. it's really cool.

What do you think it meant to April to be the one there to help him work through this as he confronts his father?
You know, what I love the most about our dynamic in this episode is that so often in our history on the show together, April's been the one that's been spinning out of control and Jackson's the one that has to center her and ground her and show up for her. And that has been a pattern over and over and over again. She's the one that runs away and he has to get her back. She's the one that freaks out and he then has to show up for her. In this episode, she is rock solid for him. She shows up for him in a way that he didn't even know he needed or could articulate that he needed. He never thought that he would want to have her there for this. I think he discovers by the end of the episode that she was exactly the only right person to be there with him as he went through this. I love it.

I love that we get to see her be really strong for him and not need anything from him. That's the thing that I love the most about it. There was no moment of neediness for her. She didn't need him to be nicer to her, she didn't need him to get his act together. She knew what he needed, and then she provided that for him.

It was kept under wraps that Eric Roberts was cast as his father. What was it like getting to work with him?
He's so great. He's so amazing, so enthusiastic, so talented. Really fun to work with. it was a ball working with Eric Roberts. he was so awesome—and felt so right for this role. He's so charming and likable, but yet at the same time, you're like, "How could someone so charming and likable have completely abandoned all of his responsibilities and his own child?" It's hard. You want to hate him, but then you can't. It's an interesting line he has to walk to play this character and he does it brilliantly.

We Ranked All the Grey's Anatomy Deaths By How Hard They Made Us Cry

Aside from the big moment between the sheets, the fans overall have just been thrilled to get a Japril sequel after last season's episode. What did it mean for you and Jesse to get to have this one-off adventure again?
We felt a great sense of responsibility. We felt like Shonda [Rhimes] had trusted us with something huge. We felt that way last year, too. When she gave us that episode later year, it was an honor. It was really humbling to have her basically say I believe that these two characters will capture the attention of our Grey's Anatomy audience for an entire episode, you know? That felt very big and meaningful. And to get to do it again, it was even more of an honor.

And Jesse and I have always worked really well together. We've always been really passionate about the material, have always been super invested in our characters' journey and the relationship between April and Jackson. So, for us, this was just such a ball. We had so much fun working on the script and taking it to pieces and really finding and mining all of the inner workings and all the layers that were happening. And we were shooting on location and we were nowhere near the hospital, so it really felt like we ran off to do a little move together. And with Kevin [McKidd,] who we love and is one of out absolute favorite directors and people. So to have him at the helm for this episode was also such a tremendous gift. He's amazing.

Grey's Anatomy's Kevin McKidd Has a Grim Warning About Owen & Amelia's Future: It's Not Looking Good

What can you tease about what they return to at Grey Sloan next week with this civil war that's still waging on?
We pick up back at the hospital right where we left off before running over to Montana. And at this point, really the main focus is what's going on with Bailey, Arizona and Richard because there's a lot of feeling of betrayal and hurt and loyalty questions and all that stuff, so that stuff—there's a lot of be ironed out and healed and sorted through when we get back to the hospital. That's really the focus when we get back.

Before they left, Jackson and April were really on opposing sides in this whole situation. With the trip to Montana and all that they go through, does it sort of heal them or have they come to a different understanding? Or does it affect their positioning at all when they come back?
I think that basically what happens in Montana makes everything else feel pretty small and unimportant. This is a pretty big deal, him finding his father, looking for his father, conquering a huge fear that he had about whether he would be a good father or not. And April showing up for him through all of that and assuring him of what a tremendous dad he is, I think that ends up pretty much erasing the tension over hospital politics. So, yeah, I think there's enough that happens in Montana that really does a profound job of healing the two of them.

9 Steps Drake Took to Transform From Degrassi's Wheelchair Jimmy Into Rap Legend Champagne Papi

Drake, Boy Meets World

ZUMA Press / MEGA

Drake has embarked on his Boy Meets World Tour, selling out arenas across the globe over the last few months and bringing people from all different backgrounds and cultures together under one roof, singing along to his songs, and despite any language barrier, never missing a line.

This moment is only about to be catapulted to a new level when he drops his next album, More Life, on Saturday.

The release has been highly-anticipated following the massive success of his last album, Views, and further proves that Drizzy Drake is arguably one of the greatest rap legends of our time.

But how exactly did he get here? What steps did this child star from Toronto take to transform himself from Degrassi's Wheelchair Jimmy to world-renowned Champagne Papi?

Let us investigate…

Sandi Graham, Drake

George Pimentel/WireImage

Step One: Born a Legend, From Legends

There are a lot of people who make it big in the world without ever knowing one of both of their parents, and while Drake's dad may not have lived with him and his mother growing up, both Sandi and Dennis Graham had a major influence on his life, which he's detailed in his songs time and time again. His mom—a Jewish woman from Canada—has always supported his career, and he often raps about the influence she had on his desire to make it big. "Look What You've Done" is just one song in which he dedicates his career to her: "I get to make good on my promise/ It all worked out, girl/ We shoulda known."

Dennis Graham, Drake

Prince Williams/FilmMagic

His father, on the other hand, lived in Memphis, Tenn. Drake has rapped about the fact that Dennis wasn't able to visit him growing up and often missed child support payments, but as time went on, they finally re-connected. In "From Time" he raps: "It's just me and my old man getting back to basics/ We've been talking 'bout the future and time that we wasted/ When he put that bottle down, girl that n---a's amazing."

Now, both of his parents are heavily involved in his career. His father—whose made a name for himself with his thick mustache and retro-style—often attends concerts and after-parties alongside his son. His mother has remained by his side throughout it all, always showing her support during major milestones like his 30th birthday dinner.

Drake's Sulky Selfies

Step Two: Started From the Bottom

OK, so maybe Drake's start wasn't exactly the bottom—it's not like he was serving McDonald's in Toronto—but he did start out in what's usually deemed a doomed beginning: being a child actor. Drizzy starred as Jimmy Brooks on the hit Canadian teen series Degrassi. After being shot in the back during a school shooting, he was confined to a wheelchair and, thus, became known as Wheelchair Jimmy.

The show was a bit corny, albeit quite popular even in the United States, giving Drake at least a small, unexpected platform for kick-starting his music career. In fact, in one episode, he showcased his rapping skills, which proved to be pretty good even then!

Step Three: Listen to Yourself, You Don't Need Nobody Else

Drake knew he was the man by the age of 6 and that has never changed. Being a child star on a teen series wasn't exactly how anyone would picture a rapper kicking off his career, but the thing about Drake is, he doesn't care and he never has. During a behind-the-scenes look at his life beyond Degrassi, he promised viewers and fans he'd always loved music and was determined to pursue it.

In fact, he put out music with Trey Songz even before he was ever signed to a label, proving he was working on his rap career before he ever actually made any money from it.

Needless to say, he dove right into that dream and never stopped pursuing it. Based upon his childhood, he always knew people would doubt his rapping ability and call him privileged, like everything was handed to him "top of the ribbon, never worked to get it" (just listen to "Two Birds, One Stone"). But he did work and part of that work was ignoring the nay-sayers and breaking the glass ceiling of his child star history in order for people to take him seriously. "Should I listen to everybody or myself? Because myself just told myself, 'You the motherf--kin' man, you don't need no help."

Step Four: But Definitely Still Answer When Wayne Calls Up Your Phone

Even with all the confidence in the world, no rapper can make it without joining a label, and Drake made a solid decision when he answered Lil Wayne's phone call in 2009 and took a flight to Houston the next morning. He wrote the So Far Gone mix-tape immediately after his return. Not only did this album result in him to signing with YMCMB, but it also gave us his first official 17 songs, including his first radio hit "Best I Ever Had," which became the song of summer that year.

Since then, he's surpassed Jay Z on Billboard's hip-hop chart for most No.1 hits, broke Michael Jackson's record for the most nominations at the American Music Awards, earned over 1 billion streams with Views and simultaneously turned "One Dance" into the most-streamed song on Spotify.

But the question remains: Why? Why did we start listening to this former-child-start-turned-rapper from Toronto in the first place? Why do we love him now? Why is he arguably the most popular rapper of our generation?

This leads us to our next point...

Sad Drake Meme

Step Five: He's Emotionally Relevant

Some people give him a hard time for being emotional—"true say, I been goin' hard, but then again they think I'm soft"—but in reality, we connect with Drake because we connect with his feelings. He's never been too proud to really show the world his emotions in his music, whether it's about his parents or his many loves. We appreciate that we can relate to him when he raps about texting—"three dots, you thinking of a reaction still"—or hitting his "tees with Febreze" or getting in fights at the Cheesecake Factory (we all love to go there).

He hasn't become the best rapper alive because he's predictable, only rapping about the money and the cars and the fame—he raps about real things with real emotions that real people can relate to.

A post shared by champagnepapi (@champagnepapi) on

Step Six: Rep Your City and Take No New Friends

If there's one thing we know about Drake, it's that he reps the six 'til the day he dies. This is, of course, because it's the city that raised him and the city he met all of his closest friends—friends that he's maintained even through all the fame. In fact, other than YMCMB, Drake reps October's Very Own (aka OVO), a Canadian record label he runs with those day-one friends.

The fact that he maintains childhood relationships is another reason we love him so much. It's something we can relate to and something that gives him a sense of realness in an industry that is often portrayed as a facade with fake relationships and fake love.

A post shared by champagnepapi (@champagnepapi) on

Step Seven: Except for a Few New Friends

Not only has Drake maintained his closest friends all these years, but he's also helped kickstart the careers of several now-famous musicians.

For example, Kendrick Lamar opened for him during one of his first tours. He discovered The Weeknd and featured him on hit songs like "Crew Love" and "The Ride" off Take Care. He even hopped on remixes with rising artists like Migos and Fetty Wap, bringing new listeners to their music and giving them a little boost to help take them to the next level of their career.

Rihanna and Drake: Romance Rewind

Rihanna, Drake

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Step Seven: And a Few Famous Love Interests

From his public relationship with Rihanna to his romance with Jennifer Lopez to whatever went on (is still going on?) with Nicki Minaj, Drake's love life has made for some great music with some great story lines.

Songs like "Too Good" and "Make Me Proud" became even bigger bangers with the addition of a romantic interest between Champagne Papi and his lady-of-the-moment. Not to mention, they bring a whole slew of new listeners to his music—thank you to Rihanna Navy!

Music aside, moments the rapper has shared with these women give yet another reason to relate to him. For example, he spilled his heart out for Rihanna at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards and confessed he's always been in love with her despite the fact that she's shut him down (like when she dodged a kiss from him immediately after said speech). We love that he's vulnerable and his openness always has us dissecting his songs to figure out who his lyrics are directed toward.

Taylor Swift, Drake Lyrics GIFs

Step Eight: Don't Take Yourself Too Seriously

Drake does something a little different than most rappers—he's not too proud to get weird.

Whether he's becoming a meme from "Hotline Bling" or taking over Saturday Night Live, he's able to step away from the "I'm too hard for this" stigma attached to rappers and not take himself too seriously. Thus, you guessed it, this gives us yet another reason to find him relatable, becoming even bigger fans and buying even more of his music.

Step Nine: Do Right and Kill Everything

Finally, we couldn't end this post with Drake's motherf--kin motto (and no, not YOLO). In case you've been hiding under a Drake-less rock somewhere, other than it being his middle name, D.R.A.K.E. stands for Do Right And Kill Everything.

The No. 1 thing that Drake has done right in his successful career is simply staying true to himself. If you go back and watch his behind-the-scenes interview at the top of this post and compare it to a recent appearance on The Ellen Show or an interview with GQ, Drake today is the same Drake he was a decade ago.

He's still in touch with his emotions, and he's still vulnerable. He's still dedicating his music to his parents, and his still repping the six. He's still with his day-one friends, and he's still helping support growing artists. He's still a little weird, and he's not afraid to admit that he's still a child star from Toronto.

He's still finding success after success with his albums, and he's still one of the greatest rappers of our time.

We can't wait to see what More Life has in store!

"I'm not sure he'll be changing diapers," Rande shared with E! News. Cindy later cracked, "By the way, you don't know how to do diapers."

Families aside, there was another reason to celebrate at Umami Burger Thursday night.

Cindy debuted her new Casa Burger while Rande introduced his new Spicy Margarita with Casamigos Tequila.

Both are available at participating Umami Burger locations nationwide from March 17 to May 12, 2017, with $1 from the sale of each burger and cocktail benefitting American Family Children's Hospital.
